DSI Research Portfolio

Our research strategy is informed by the observation that the unique challenges found in real-world problems often inspire foundational advances in data science. By partnering with groups around campus, DSI simultaneously supports the research mission of the university and advances the forefront of data science through use-inspired research.

This portfolio includes examples of projects that DSI has contributed to through our Data Science Services, as well as projects led by our staff and affiliates. Our research portfolio is growing, and we regularly add new projects to this page.

A circle with the Greek lambda symbol and the letter O.

Open Lambda

DSI collaborated with Tyler Caraza-Harter, UW–Madison Computer Sciences, to advance the integration of OpenLambda as a practical, serverless platform capable of supporting real-world applications.

AI-Driven Anomaly Detection

In this industry collaboration with SafeSet, DSI developed a novel error trap detector utilizing the latest advancements in large language models (LLMs).

Flow charts showing how documents were screened, distilled and summarized for soybean farm management planning.

Applying Large Language Models for Farm Management Insight

To help farmers apply the latest research, we tested whether AI tools like large language models can turn studies into practical advice.

Alfalfa Crop Management: Systemic Review and Meta-Analysis

This project built a data-driven framework to quantify the agronomic and economic impacts of alfalfa management practices.

White mold on a soybean stem

Evaluation of Fungicides for Soybean White Mold

Sclerotinia stem rot is ranked third among the top soybean diseases in the northern United States. We evaluated the efficacy of fungicide treatments on disease reduction and grain yield.

Midbody formed at the center of an intercellular bridge during telophase of the cell cycle.

Understanding Midbody Remnants

Once considered a “garbage can” of mitosis, midbody remnants (MBRs) are frequently internalized by neighboring cells. This project uncovers MBR payloads and mechanisms of information transfer.

Open Source crop disease forecasting tool that uses crop disease and forecasting date to identify disease risk areas.

Open Source Crop Disease Forecasting Tool

Emerging diseases pose a growing threat to crop yields. Our open-source crop disease forecasting tool helps farmers protect their yields and profitability through data-driven decisions.

A map of the United States with colorful circles depicting sampling locations for soil organic carbon and properties from 1985 to 2021.

Soil Organic Carbon Assistant

This research aims to quantify the spatial and temporal variations of soil organic carbon stocks across the contiguous US. DSI also developed an open-source API that delivers soil organic carbon data.

ML for Learning to Read

We developed a machine learning model to simulate children’s reading learning processes. This digital twin allows us to explore reading mechanisms and could lead to more personalized instruction.

Interface for the corn protection network that indicates crops characteristics, treatment, and fungicide ROI.

Corn Fungicide ROI Calculator

This decision-support tool allows corn growers to estimate the profitability of different fungicide applications based on real-time crop conditions.

Corn Yields and Diseases

DSI supported a meta-analysis to determine whether foliar fungicides were effectively controlling diseases and potentially enhancing the overall health of corn crops.

The same leaf is pictured twice; the right side uses the non-AI image processing application to identify healthy, lesioned, and non-leaf areas.

Leaf Image Processing

This project automated the manual process of collecting data from leaf images. DSI data scientists created an app that segments these images into healthy, lesioned, and not-leaf areas.
