Project summary

This project builds off the DairyBrain infrastructure project that ingests and analyzes data from dairy farms, adapting it to an easily-deployable open-source project. This work makes it easier for new farms to be brought online and improve the system for integration with external services—in particular, the RuFaS whole-farm simulation model. The objective is to provide a universal system for farm data ingestion that can provide farmers with a standardized method for bringing their data together in one place. As part of this project, the researchers will re-convene a network of industry and academic stakeholders to address issues that confront the digitalization of agricultural data. The Data Science Institute will mentor a student software development team that contributes to the existing system.

Primary objectives

  1. Take the existing DairyBrain data ingestion and aggregation system, and convert it to an open source project that can be deployed on cloud infrastructure. In addition, we will modify the existing system to facilitate easier on-farm deployment.
  2. Reconvene the coordinated innovation network that acted as a steering committee from our previous grant in order to foster communication and interaction between industrial and academic partners in the dairy industry, and develop a number of white papers that address relevant topics around digitalization of farm data.
  3. Develop additional functionality within the DairyBrain system to lay the groundwork for integrating real time dairy data into the RuFaS system.

Project outputs/deliverables

  • An open source respository containing key elements of the DairyBrain ingestion system
  • An implementation of the DairyBrain system running on cloud infrastructure
  • A series of white papers derived from topic exploration and discussion with the Coordinated Innovation network
