Bridging our Distributed Campus with Data Science

UW-Madison is a large, distributed campus, and it can be challenging to find what you are looking for or understand the campus’s activities holistically. Faculty and staff with data science expertise and interests work across UW–Madison, yet they may not be connected to data science efforts outside of their own departments or domains. DSI is using a data science approach to develop tools that break down silos and build bridges.

Data Science @ UW Community Map

The Data Science @ UW Community Map helps people navigate the thriving data science community on our campus. In 2022, DSI launched this map to seed data science collaboration and strengthen data science research, education, and outreach.

Research Collaboration Tools

DSI tools connect people with relevant research, shared interests and potential collaborators across campus. Our faculty search tool helps anyone find UW–Madison experts. RABBIT, which was created in partnership with the Office of Business Engagement, is an AI-powered faculty discovery tool that is available to UW–Madison faculty and staff and WARF employees.

Faculty Search Tool RABBIT

“When I first arrived on campus, I found it challenging to navigate the landscape and discover all the people on campus doing data science because it is so interdisciplinary. We built the data science map and the faculty search tool to break down silos and to help build a community.”

—Kyle Cranmer, David R. Anderson Director, UW-Madison Data Science Institute

Are you interested in a map for your research community?

In 2023, the Center for Genomics Science Innovation approached DSI about building a similar map for the campus genomics community, and Research Communities @ UW was born.

We are working on more maps to connect more research communities at UW-Madison. If this interests you, share your idea with us by filling out this contact form. We’ll meet with you to see if your project is a good fit for the Research @ UW Community Map initiative. If it is, we’ll work together to set up the taxonomy, branding, and “About” information. Next, your community members will add themselves to the map. Once the map is populated, we will link to it from the top-level community map.
