DSI Special Seminar with Dr. Talitha Washington

Data Science Institute Special Seminar. Removing Barriers to Data and AI Innovation to Advance Human Flourishing. Dr. Talitha Washington, Howard University. May 16, 2:00-3:15pm, Orchard View Room, Discovery Building

Join the Data Science Institute on May 16 for a special seminar with Dr. Talitha Washington, Professor of Mathematics at Howard University. Dr. Washington will speak on Removing Barriers to Data and AI Innovation to Advance Human Flourishing, 2:00-3:15 p.m. in the Discovery Building Orchard View Room. Coffee and cookies will be served.

The rapidly evolving landscape of data, artificial intelligence, and technology is accompanied by uncertainty and ambiguity. However, when used to augment and extend human capabilities, these tools can aid in extending the frontiers of knowledge. Dr. Washington will share insights on advancing AI technology and policy responsible for ensuring these technologies promote innovation, accountability, and broad societal benefit.

Talitha Washington serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Applied Data Science & Analytics, the Sean McCleese Endowed Chair in Computer Science, Race, and Social Justice, a Professor of Mathematics, and co-chair of the AI Advisory Council at Howard University. Dr. Washington also serves as the Past-President of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and previously served as a Program Director at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). Dr. Washington’s research spans applied mathematics, dynamical systems, nonstandard finite difference schemes, data science, artificial intelligence, and education. She earned her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Spelman College, which included a semester abroad at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico. She later completed her master’s and doctoral degrees in mathematics at the University of Connecticut, which recently awarded her an honorary doctorate in science. She is a Fellow of the AWM, the American Mathematical Society (AMS), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

This seminar is sponsored by the Data Science Institute, powered by American Family Insurance, and co-sponsored by the Department of Mathematics. Questions: Cris Carusi, cecarusi@wisc.edu.
