RISE-AI Collaboration HQ

The Data Science Institute has assumed responsibility for a new, campus-wide effort called the RISE-AI Collaboration HQ. As the RISE Initiative moves from initial hiring to implementing its vision for research, education and engagement, the RISE-AI Collaboration HQ is connecting new RISE faculty with existing campus networks advancing scholarship in the field of artificial intelligence.

This effort includes managing a portfolio of events, positioning research teams to pursue extramural research funding, and supporting investments in research computing infrastructure available to all of campus.

The group will catalyze research communities centered on innovative focus areas and build connections among UW–Madison’s AI community, which includes the more than 35 new RISE-AI hires and current faculty, staff and students. DSI will integrate new research partnerships with existing efforts on campus by leveraging its extensive network of affiliates. The effort will also foster collaborations intended to extend beyond research to include teaching and engagement.

Support for incubating collaborative research

A goal of the RISE-AI Collaboration HQ is to foster new research communities built around topical focus areas, and we plan to organize teams to incubate novel research ideas. We are particularly interested in multidisciplinary topics that bring many different perspectives to the table and that include new RISE faculty. Some examples of possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • AI for protein modeling
  • AI and humanistic inquiry
  • Trustworthy AI

Selected incubator teams will undertake collaborative activities such as seminars, symposia, ideation sessions for early-stage research, and networking events. The RISE-AI Collaboration HQ will support activities for selected teams.

Resources

Research Funding

The RISE-AI Collaboration HQ supports UW–Madison researchers’ efforts to find and pursue funding opportunities from federal agencies, industry, and philanthropic foundations. Our incubator program is focused on building teams that are well-positioned to submit competitive proposals. In addition, we plan to run a seed grant competition, and we will support teams pursuing funding programs run out of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR).

Find Collaborators

UW-Madison is a large, distributed campus, and it can be challenging to find what you are looking for or understand the campus’s activities holistically. We are using a data science approach to develop tools that foster interdisciplinary approaches by breaking down silos and building bridges. For example, RABBIT is an AI-powered faculty discovery tool that is available to all UW–Madison faculty and staff. We encourage you to add yourself to the community map and subscribe to the Data Science @ UW newsletter.

Research Computing

UW–Madison has a vast research computing infrastructure that includes resources addressing various types of storage and processing needs (including GPUs), as well as a robust network of facilitators and service providers who support research. Some of these resources are concentrated in organizations that specialize in the patterns and needs of individual research communities, and some are provided centrally.
